Sutskever Launches Safe Superintelligence

Ilya Sutskever, a prominent figure in the AI world and co-founder of OpenAI, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to build “safe superintelligence.” According to Bloomberg News, the new company’s first product will focus exclusively on safe superintelligence, with no other products or services being released in the interim. Sutskever, renowned for his research in AI, has previously worked with tech giants like Google, Tesla, and OpenAI, and is considered a key architect of Generative AI at OpenAI. In a 2020 interview with Lex Fridman, Sutskever discussed various issues in AI evolution, providing insight into his thought process and vision for the future of AI.

Dell, NVIDIA, and xAI Join Forces on Supercomputer

Elon Musk has announced that his AI startup, xAI collaborate with Dell, Super Micro Computer, and NVIDIA to construct a supercomputer designed to enhance its AI chatbot, Grok. Dell and Super Micro will each provide half of the server racks for the project. This supercomputer, which xAI has dubbed the "Gigafactory of Compute," will utilise up to 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, making it one of the largest GPU clusters globally. Dell is also working with NVIDIA to build an "AI factory" to support this development, highlighting the critical role of advanced AI infrastructure in the tech industry. The partnership has already had a positive impact on SMCI and NVIDIA's stock, which saw a significant rise, reflecting investor confidence in the growing demand for AI hardware.

Anthropic Launches Claude 3.5 Sonnet

Anthropic has launched Claude 3.5 Sonnet, claiming it sets new benchmarks in AI performance and affordability on Thursday. Available on Claude.ai, Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in graduate-level reasoning, undergraduate-level knowledge, and coding proficiency. According to Anthropic, it operates at twice the speed of its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus, making it ideal for complex tasks such as context-sensitive customer support and orchestrating multi-step workflows. The company also announced plans to release Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus later this year, further expanding their AI model family. Hours after its release, Claude 3.5 Sonnet has received mixed reactions on X, ranging from excitement to skepticism. 

Perplexity AI Faces Plagiarism Allegations

Wired reported on June 19 that Perplexity AI’s chatbot is “surreptitiously scraping—and making things up out of thin air.” This follows Forbes' claim that the AI startup appears to be plagiarizing journalists' work with its new feature, Perplexity Pages. Despite the scrutiny from traditional media, in a recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, the startup’s founder described the company as an "answer engine." Additionally, Perplexity AI announced the availability of Claude 3.5 Sonnet on its platform, with plans to launch on mobile soon. CEO Aravind Srinivas revealed on June 18 a partnership with SoftBank to expand operations in Japan.

Apple Seeks Local AI Partner in China

Apple is actively seeking a local AI partner in China, primarily due to the country's ban on ChatGPT, the Wall Street Journal reported. This move is part of Apple's strategy to comply with stringent Chinese regulations on generative AI and to mitigate the impact of removing over 100 ChatGPT-like apps from its China App Store. In its quest, Apple is considering Baidu's Ernie Bot to power AI features on iPhones sold in mainland China. This partnership underscores the challenges Apple faces in the Chinese market, where regulatory hurdles and local competition complicate the deployment of advanced AI technologies.
