Artificial intelligence (AI) is sustaining the venture capital ecosystem, with over 40% of new U.S. "unicorns" in the first half of 2024 being AI companies, according to PitchBook. Thirteen new U.S. AI unicorns emerged, adding $116 billion in value. Elon Musk's xAI alone contributed $24 billion. AI investments accounted for 20% of venture dollars in North America and Europe in 2023, rising in 2024. On July 3, Cloudflare announced a new “easy button” to block all AI bots, available to all customers, including those on the free tier. This move comes as generative AI's demand for content skyrockets, with not all AI companies transparently identifying their web scraping bots. Prominent bots of the day included Bytespider, Amazonbot, and GPTBot, with Bytespider leading in request volume. Cloudflare’s new feature helps safeguard content creators by blocking AI bots, updating automatically with new offending bot fingerprints. Users can activate this feature via the Security > Bots section of the Cloudflare dashboard. Cloudflare continues to refine its bot detection models to protect content creators’ rights and maintain a safe internet environment.
